Care Tips for your Acer:
Watering:
- Regular Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry periods. Water deeply and thoroughly to ensure the roots receive adequate moisture.
- Mulching: Apply a layer of mulch around the base to help retain soil moisture and regulate temperature. This also reduces weed competition.
Placement:
- Light Requirements: Place the tree in a location with partial shade to avoid scorching the delicate leaves, especially in hotter climates. Morning sun and afternoon shade are ideal.
- Soil Conditions: Ensure well-drained soil. Japanese Maples prefer slightly acidic, loamy soil rich in organic matter.
- Protection from Wind: Choose a sheltered location to protect the tree from strong winds, which can damage the foliage.
Pruning:
- Regular Pruning: Prune the tree in late winter or early spring before new growth starts. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches to maintain a healthy structure.
- Shape Maintenance: Light pruning during the growing season can help maintain the desired shape and size, but avoid heavy pruning during this time to reduce stress on the tree.
Fertilising:
- Balanced Fertiliser: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilisers, which can promote excessive foliage growth at the expense of root development.
